About the Guide #

The Macrolichen Companion of the Alaska Mainland is intended for anyone who would like to become more confident in identifying lichens in the field. The taxonomic descriptions in the guide reflect this field-based emphasis by prioritizng identifying traits that can be seen with the naked eye or hand lens. That being said, many species cannot be identified in the field alone. In these cases, we provide a brief discussion of chemical tests that can support identification.
