Identification #

Cladonia alinii is a rare or at least overlooked Cladonia species. It is esorediate, squamulose, and with pointed podetia, some simple, some branched or with irregular or aborted cups. Where cups or weak cups are present there are proliferations from the margins of the scyphi. The podetia, which are not perfectly erect, are grayish brown but are green towards to basal portions. The cortex is noticeably thick and smooth; C. alinii does not form isidia or soredia (CLH). C. singularis is similar but has more slender and elongated podetia which do not form cups.
