Identification #

A branched Cladonia which does not have soredia but a smooth or areolate cortex. Specimens with abundant squamules can appear to have a roughened surface. Other specimens lack squamules entirely. The similar C. scabriuscula has soredia at the tips of its podetia. The axils are not so consistently opened at the ends of the podetia as in C. crispata.

On the ground either directly on soil or among bryophytes, in rare cases on wood (CLH).
