Identification #

This species is very slender and is tipped in much lighter colored apothecia than in most other brown-fruited Cladonia species. Unfortunately, the apothecia seem uncommon. Other light-tan-fruited species can include C. botryrtes and C. carneola. C. norvrgica is much more slender and often erratic and contorted, weakly erect.

Notes #

A point of confusion for this species may be when looking at photos from Europe. There is a species of mite which does not occur in North America which causes bright red spots in the lichen thallus which are not seen in North American thalli.
