Baeomyces rufus is a crustose species of lichen with small, pink to brown, stipitate apothecia growing from light green, leprose thalli. B.rufus is very similar morphologically to B. carneus. B. rufus, however, does not have the small lobes along the thallus margin that are observed in B. carneus.
