Identification #

The only “socket lichen” with a bright orange lower surface of the lobes. These are often visible from above where lobes become upturned or at least at the margins when more prostrate. Large, brown, often convex apothecia give this lichen the other name “chocolate chip” lichen. When not convex, the apothecia are planar or noticeably less immersed than in the other species of Solorina.
