Identification #

A dark brown lichen with strikingly contrasting bright yellow marginal and laminal soralia. P. hawaiiensis and P. holarctica are similarly colored but usually have narrower lobes than those of mature P. citrina. P. mallota has grayish rather than the yellowish soralia and soredia seen in P. citrina. P. holarctica has a bright yellow upper medulla, P. hawaiiensis a pale yellow upper medulla in patches (Lücking et al. 2017).
