Glypholecia scabra could easily be mistaken for a species of Umbilicaria when well-developed or one of the many scale or squamulose species when young or underdeveloped. It is the most nearly foliose member of the Acarosporales known of Alaska, an order dominated by crustose species. Because it lacks rhiznes and a lower crotex it is not considered truly foliose but subfoliose. The species also has compound apothecia (CLH). The compound apothecia are quite unlike most of Alaska’s other lichens, although from a distance they might mimic the gyrose apothecia seen in some Umbilicaria species.
