Apothecia more immersed in the similar U. phaea. The upper surface of this species is a tan to brown color and is covered in pustules. These pustules have corresponding depressions on the darkened to blackened undersides. This species lacks rhizines, isidia and soredia but can produce flat, black apothecia (Brodo et al. 2001, CLH).&lt;/p&gt;</description>
